Schott acquires manufacturing company Elecpac in Cary

Cary-based Elecpac, a privately held manufacturer, is expected to announce Thursday that it was acquired by Schott North America Inc.

Schott makes hermetically sealed containers that help protect sensitive technology, such as computer chips, and are used by the defense, aerospace and medical industries.

The Cary company will be renamed Schott Elecpac LLC and will keep its 65 employees, said newly appointed President and General Manager Ronald Campbell.

"We don't plan any layoffs and actually intend to grow the business and expect to hire more workers," Campbell said.

Executives for both companies are expected to be in Cary to sign the acquisition agreement. They would not release terms of the deal.

Elecpac, which has operated since 1978, was a division of Wilbrecht Electronics Inc. of St. Paul, Minn. Schott has been in business for about 125 years and has 14 facilities nationwide, Campbell said.

Schott's electronic packaging unit has operations also in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Czech Republic as well as Singapore, Japan and China.

"Acquiring Elecpac fits our strategic goals with our products, especially for our customers in the military," Campbell said.
