Pottawatomie Garden Club gives landscaping award to St. Charles Public Library

On Oct. 25, the Pottawatomie Garden Club awarded its annual Landscape Commendation Award to the St. Charles Public Library.

Edith Craig, director of the library, was present at the club's monthly meeting to receive the award.

The library recently under went extensive renovation and remodeling and as part of that restoration the landscape surrounding the library was redesigned.

Landscape designer Nilay Mistry used the outdoor spaces throughout the project to facilitate learning and community gathering.

There is a sunken courtyard that feature a series of terraces and concrete benches that serve as seating for a variety of events. Also, there is a pallet of native plants to provide color and texture throughout the year.

A variety of sculptures have found new prominence among these perennials.

Garden club members felt that the library's landscape redesign embodied the spirit of the award which is beautification of the St. Charles community through landscape.

The Pottawatomie Garden Club meets from March through October on the first Monday of the month.

Since 1928, the members of Pottawatomie Garden Club have made St. Charles a more beautiful community. They plant flowers on the Main Street and Illinois bridges, and around the Municipal building each spring and fall; they honor past members with the Memorial Tree Program; and they present an annual Landscape Commendation Award to businesses in the township.

The club also awards an annual scholarship to horticulture students and provides support to gardening and environmental projects in the community.
