Waubonsee to commemorate 20th anniversary of Sept. 11

Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove will commemorate the 20th anniversary of Sept. 11 with an educational event of remembrance and renewal featuring a first-hand account of 9/11 survivor Joe Dittmar.

Dittmar was attending a routine business meeting on the 105th floor of Two World Trade Center, also known as the south tower when terrorists piloted an airliner into the north and south towers.

One of only seven survivors from that meeting of 54 people, Dittmar will share his story of that day, as well historical, personal, ethical, and social lessons that can be learned from his experience.

The presentation is recommended for sixth-graders and above.

This event will also feature a public viewing of the documentary, "In the Shadow of the Towers: Stuyvesant High on 9/11," a unique eyewitness perspective on that tragic day and its aftermath (TV-14).

The program will conclude with a moment of silence at Waubonsee's Peace Pole.

The event will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, in the auditorium on the college's Sugar Grove campus, Route 47 at Waubonsee Drive. Doors will open at 1:45 p.m. First responders, educators, and community members are invited to request tickets in advance of the general public through Tuesday, Aug. 31.

The college would also like to recognize community members who assisted in the 9/11 rescue and recovery efforts. Please email MarketingandCommunications@waubonsee.edu to describe your involvement.

This event is free, but tickets are required. Get tickets at www.waubonseetickets.com. Masks are required at indoor events.

If you need a sign language interpreter or an accommodation for this event, please call (630) 466-5772. For groups of nine or more, contact MarketingandCommunications@waubonsee.edu.
