Democrats in position to claim majority on Kane County Board

As mail-in votes continued to trickle in, Democrats on Wednesday still seemed poised to claim a slight majority on the Kane County Board based on updated results from the nine contested seats in Tuesday's election.

The most significant race remained in District 22 where Elgin Democrat Verner Tepe maintained a lead over two-term Republican Doug Scheflow. If Tepe flips the seat, and other results hold, Democrats would have a 13-11 majority on the Kane County Board.

Of the 92,094 requested mail-in ballots in Kane County, 10,096 are outstanding. Those ballots would count as long as they're postmarked by Election Day and received by Nov. 17.

District 4

Aurora Democrat Mavis Bates led Aurora Republican Tracy Miller in an open seat previously held by Democrat Angela Thomas.

With all 17 precincts reporting, Bates had 5,133 votes to Miller's 3,325.

District 10

David Brown, a Republican from Batavia, maintained a lead in his bid to win the open seat previously held by Republican Susan Starrett.

With all 15 precincts reporting, Brown led North Aurora Democrat Mary Kay Crantz 6,326 to 6,083.

District 12

Another open seat, previously held by Republican John Hoscheit for the last 25 years, leaned toward Republican Ken Shepro of St. Charles.

With all 15 precincts reporting, Shepro led St. Charles Democrat Ruth Kuzmanic by 1,112 votes.

District 14

Republican incumbent Mark Davoust of St. Charles held a 7,163 to 4,943 lead over St. Charles Democrat William Bachman with all 11 precincts reporting.

District 16

Separated by 369 votes and with all 11 precincts reporting, Republican incumbent Michael Kenyon of South Elgin led South Elgin Democrat Megan Larson.

District 18

Another Republican incumbent, Drew Frasz of Elburn, continued to lead Elburn Democrat Sandy Kaczmarski with all 10 precincts reporting. Frasz led 7,888 to 5,760.

District 20

Democrat Cherryl Fritz Strathmann of Elgin appeared poised to claim an open seat previously held by Democrat Penny Wegman. With all 13 precincts reporting, Strathmann led Elgin Republican Lucio Estrada 3,692 to 1,928.

District 22

Elgin's Vern Tepe stayed on track to flip the only seat among the nine contested seats from Tuesday's election. With all 10 precincts reporting, the Democrat led Elgin Republican incumbent Doug Scheflow 5,328 to 4,891.

District 24

Carpentersville's Jarett Sanchez, the lone Democratic incumbent on the ballot among contested seats, held a sizable lead over Carpentersville Republican Roberta Andresen with all 10 precincts reporting.

Sanchez led 3,143 to 1,313.
