Former Illinois Basketball Phenom Jon Scheyer Supports Hometown Startup Honest Game

Former Glenbrook North High School All Star and Duke University All-American Jon Scheyer brings his deep knowledge and experience of the athletics space back to support his hometown of Chicago as an advisor to Honest Game.

Honest Game, founded in 2019 by Kim Michelson and Joyce Anderson, is a Chicago startup in the sports technology space. Honest Game's technology helps high school athletes navigate the college academic eligibility process. The startup works with public and private high schools, coaches and counselors, club sports teams and individual athletes to ensure students complete the academic requirements required to play sports in college.

As a public benefit corporation, Honest Game tracks a student's academic progress in real time so they can meet National Collegiate Athletic Association requirements and access available college athletic scholarships. The startup provides academic eligibility status for each player, and can identify when a student needs summer school or credit recovery courses to become college eligible.

Scheyer's decision to support Honest Game comes from a deep understanding of how best to support student-athletes holistically. "Honest Game is filling a big need in the sector to provide wraparound support for student-athletes and provide them a step-by-step plan to college access and opportunity," Jon said.

Earlier this year, the startup won first place and $50,000 at the first-ever Chicago Bulls Venture Competition. The investment was provided by LOUD Capital, a Columbus-based VC firm that partnered with the Bulls on the competition. Honest Game claimed their prize during halftime of the Bulls' game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on March 10.

A two-time Gatorade Illinois Player of the Year, Scheyer was named to the 100 Legends of Illinois Basketball in 2007. After high school, Scheyer took his talents to Duke University and helped spark the Blue Devils to two ACC championships. Scheyer was one of the most versatile players in Duke history, concluding his playing career as the only player in school history to record at least 2,000 points, 500 rebounds, 400 assists, 250 three-point field goals and 200 steals. He averaged 14.4 points per game while scoring in double figures 114 times (sixth-most in Duke history) and leading the Blue Devils to a 115-29 (.799) record.

Scheyer has served on Mike Krzyzewski's staff since the 2013-14 season. Scheyer's role with the Blue Devils during his seven years on staff has been elevated from Special Assistant to Assistant Coach to his most recent promotion as Associate Head Coach following the 2017-18 campaign.

Following his graduation from Duke in 2010, Scheyer played professionally with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the NBA D League and overseas with Maccabi Tel Aviv and Gran Canaria.
