Street and stormwater improvements among Northbrook's capital projects
Northbrook residents will see plenty of orange in the coming months as the construction season continues.
The village is spending millions of dollars this year on capital projects, including pavement resurfacing, stormwater improvements and a bicycle boulevard. Here's a look at some of the projects that are underway or will begin soon:
Work has started on both the asphalt street resurfacing program and the concrete street panel replacement program.
As part of the asphalt street resurfacing program, sections roadway will be resurfaced on Brentwood Road, Carol Court, Church Street, Illinois Road, Maple Avenue, Pheasant Creek Road, Palm Lane, Ridgewood Drive, Sunset Lane, and Sycamore Lane, according to the village's website. The roughly $600,000 project is expected to be completed by the end of August.
The concrete street program, meanwhile, will focus on panel replacement on Birch Road, Mulberry Lane, Fieldwood Drive, Sunnyside Circle, Ellendale Drive, Lakedale Road, Asbury Road, Farnsworth Lane and Woodlawn Road. The roughly $598,000 project is expected to be completed by the end of October.
In addition to its sidewalk removal and replacement program, the village is planning to construct the Farnsworth-Birch-Koepke-Miller bicycle boulevard. However, a March open house on the project had to be postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
There's also four stormwater projects that are expected to begin soon and be completed by the fall - Brittany Road, Surrey Lane, Wendy Drive and Votz Road. All four projects combined are estimated to cost $1.08 million.
"These four projects are specifically to address drainage issues in those specific locations," said Erik Jensen, assistant to the public works director.
The Brittany Road project involves supplementing the existing storm sewer on Brittany with new sewer and replacing the water main on Brittany, between Dauphine Avenue and Bordeaux Court.
The Surrey Lane project calls for constructing stormwater improvements at the Surrey Lane cul-de-sac. Currently, the area experiences cul-de-sac, front yard and rear yard flooding, village officials said.
As part of the Wendy Drive project, inlet structures will be installed along Wendy. In addition, the existing storm sewer will be replaced with a higher capacity main.
Finally, the Voltz Road project involves the installation of a new storm sewer from the intersection of Voltz and South Lane to the middle fork of the North Branch of the Chicago River along a drainage easement. The new system will replace an older, deteriorated system that allows water to flood a nearby structure, officials said.
