Democrat Robert Martwick is a self-described liberal who has demonstrated a welcome ability to work across the aisle, first as a state representative for six years and most recently as a senator in Illinois District 10. He was appointment to the state Senate seat last June to replace John Mulroe, who stepped down to become a judge.

An attorney from Chicago, Martwick has demonstrated expertise in the state's pension issues and worked with state Rep. Mark Batinick, a Plainfield Republican, on a series of "buyouts" that give recent retirees the option of selling a portion of their benefits to the state in exchange for a discounted cash payment.

He's also a strong supporter of moving to an elected Chicago school board, which requires approval from Springfield. He has a firm grasp of the issues and an excellent approach to getting things done.

He is being challenged in the Democratic primary by Daniel "Danny" O'Toole, a Chicago police sergeant, who is seeking his first elected office. O'Toole seems sincere in his desire to serve, but at this point lacks the necessary knowledge and background.

The 10th District stretches from the Northwest Side of Chicago into suburbs such as Niles, Des Plaines, Rosemont and Park Ridge.

Martwick is endorsed.
