West Chicago rollover crash 'a little traumatic,' but causes minor injuries

A crash in West Chicago that temporarily closed Route 59 during the Thursday morning commute looked dramatic and took down power lines but did not cause any major injuries, authorities said.

The two-vehicle crash took place about 7 a.m. on Route 59 between Smith Road and North Avenue.

West Chicago police Sgt. Adam Reavley said it caused one vehicle to clip utility polls and come to rest upside down in the brush near Diversey Parkway on the city's far north side.

"It looked a lot worse than it actually was just because of the guide wire that came down," Reavley said.

ComEd had crews on scene before 9 a.m. working to restore power to 616 customers whose service temporarily went out because of the crash, a spokeswoman said. All outages related to the crash were fixed by 10:43 a.m.

Reavley said one driver was taken to the hospital, but the injuries were not serious. He said a preliminary crash report was not yet complete Thursday afternoon because officers still were working to interview the drivers involved.

"It was a little traumatic for them," Reavley said.
