Ex-Minnesota hockey star Broten arrested for drunken driving

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Authorities say one of the most accomplished hockey players in Minnesota history has been arrested for drunken driving for the third time.

The Star Tribune reports that Neal Broten was pulled over Sunday night in western Wisconsin. Broten lives in River Falls, Wisconsin.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Office says Broten was stopped by a sheriff's deputy after running a stop sign in Ellsworth Township. Authorities say he failed a roadside sobriety test and are waiting on a toxicology report.

Broten, originally from Roseau, helped the Minnesota Gophers to the 1979 NCAA title. He played for the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team that stunned the Russians and went on to win the gold medal. He had a long and successful NHL career.

Broten has two convictions for drunken driving in Wisconsin, in 1995 and 2003.

Phone calls by the newspaper to Broten Tuesday afternoon went unanswered.
