Marklund Center plans inaugural 5K race

Marklund Philip Center in Bloomingdale will sponsor its inaugural Run, Walk & Roll 5K and 1-Mile event for runners, walkers and wheelchair riders Sunday, April 29.

The wheelchair race will begin at 7:55 a.m. and the 5K and mile races will start at 8 a.m. at 164 S. Prairie Ave.

5K participants will run, walk or compete using racing wheelchairs on a USATF Certified Course that winds through the Westlake neighborhood.

The 1-mile walk shares a portion of the 5K course and is open to individuals and families, as well as those with strollers, walkers or wheelchairs. Therapy dogs are welcome, but other pets are not allowed.

Participants will receive a T-shirt and can enjoy live music and plenty of food at a Party in the Park after the race.

The 5K Run, Walk & Roll has taken place over the past five years at the Marklund Hyde Center in Geneva, raising $255,000 for children and adults with developmental disabilities.

Net proceeds raised from entry fees and runners' fundraising efforts will help make everyday life possible for individuals with profound disabilities through the care and services provided at Marklund.

Those who raise $100 or more will be entered in the grand prize raffle, and all participants who raise $250 or more will be guaranteed a prize.

"We are looking forward to our first Run, Walk & Roll event in Bloomingdale and would like to invite members of the community to get involved," said Stephanie Heinz, manager of community events.

"In addition to running and walking, we have other opportunities to participate, including volunteering and coming out to cheer on runners."

Online registration is available at www.marklund.org/5K.
