Commuters using the Vernon Hills Metra station soon will be able to pay for parking with their phones, following village board approval of a new parking payment program.

Passport Parking works via a phone app and is used in Buffalo Grove, Mundelein, Des Plaines, Glenview and other communities. The company is a partner with Total Parking Solutions, which provides the existing payment machines at the station.

The service is expected to be available later this summer and will include a 37 cent per use transaction fee. There is no cost to the village.
