Mount Prospect Resident Selected for Promotion to Captain

Dr. Brian Gilligan, the Department of Business Technologies Chair and Instructor at Morton College in Cicero, was recently selected for promotion to Captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve. The actual promotion ceremony will take place later is year or early 2018, according to Gilligan.

Gilligan has had a vast array of leadership positions during his 26½ years in the Naval Reserves. He started out as an Intelligence Specialist in 1991. He was commissioned as an Officer in 1993. After serving a number of analytical and leadership positions over the years, in 2014 he became a Commanding Officer of an Intelligence unit in Millington, TN. Currently, Gilligan serves as the Regional Training Officer for the Navy Information Force Reserve in Washington, DC.

"It's very gratifying to be an officer in the Navy Reserve as well as work with such a great group of colleagues at Morton College who are very supportive of my military service," Gilligan said. "After all these years, I'm still enthused and motivated by military service and the people I serve with and for."

In 2013, Gilligan served an eight-month tour of duty as an intelligence officer in Kabul, Afghanistan. He was the Chief Intelligence Officer to the Information Officer at the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) International Joint Command in Kabul.

Gilligan is the recipient of the Meritorious Serve Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, two Joint Service Commendation Medals, three Joint Service Achievement Medals, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Overseas Service Medal and Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.

Gilligan started at Morton College in the Spring of 2008 as an adjunct faculty member in managerial accounting and was hired as a full-time faculty member the following year. After spending the majority of his career in an association management, he was the Executive Director of the O'Hare Noise Compatibility Commission from 2000 to 2010.

"I'm especially thankful for the opportunity to serve while receiving the support from my wife Janice and son Kyle, as well as my civilian work colleagues," Gilligan added.

Recently, Gilligan completed his doctoral degree in Business Administration at Argosy University. He currently is the assistant treasurer and board member on the Mount Prospect Library Board.
