Big Hollow student taken for mental exam after threats

A Big Hollow Middle School student's threats to harm classmates and teachers led to an extensive investigation Wednesday evening and a mental health evaluation, police said.

A parent contacted police about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday after a child overheard another student at school talking about hurting a group of students and teachers, Lake County sheriff's officials said in a news release.

The Ingleside middle school at 26051 W. Nippersink Road had already released students for the day.

"The investigators worked closely with our administration through the evening and into the early hours on Thursday morning," Superintendent Bob Gold said. "They concluded that the situation was fully under control, and we were able to continue with school as scheduled in Thursday. "

Investigators determined the threats were made by a 13-year-old boy, whom they located at his home. He was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.

There was no immediate threat to students or staff, police said, but patrols were increased at the school as a precaution.

"Throughout this process, we chose to error on the side of caution, as our first priority was to make sure our students and staff were safe," Gold said. "We requested the involvement of the Lake County investigators when it became evident that an investigation could possibly lead to charges."

The Lake County state's attorney is reviewing the case to determine if charges will be filed against the boy.
