Hossa better; Blackhawks may start van Riemsdyk for Campbell
Marian Hossa did not practice Wednesday at the United Center, and the Blackhawks forward's playing status is day-to-day with a lower-body injury.
Coach Joel Quenneville said Hossa "felt pretty good today" and might be able to play Friday at Columbus. Hossa was injured while blocking a shot with his left leg on a Philadelphia Flyers power play during the Hawks' 7-4 victory Tuesday.
Ryan Hartman was on the ice for a second straight day and the rookie winger should be good to go Friday.
One change in the defensive pairings saw Trevor van Riemsdyk paired with Gustav Forsling, indicating that van Riemsdyk is likely to suit up against the Blue Jackets.
Brian Campbell and Michal Rozival were outside the top six.
"We don't want … the same two guys sitting out all the time," Quenneville said. "We want to incorporate some of these guys ... and see how their game's progressing."
Van Riemsdyk, who made the team as an undrafted free agent in 2014, played in all 82 games last season and averaged 23:53 of ice time in the playoff series against St. Louis.
This situation could lead a young player to sulk, but van Riemsdyk has remained upbeat and positive.
"You have to look back and realize how fortunate you are to just be in this organization," van Riemsdyk said Tuesday. "There's so many guys to learn from in practice, on the ice and off the ice.
"You go against guys like (Patrick Kane) and (Jonathan Toews) - the list goes on and on - it makes you a better player at the end of the day."
Well, thank you:
Lost in the hoopla of Marian Hossa's 500th goal and a wild third period in which 6 goals were scored was that Dennis Rasmussen scored for the first time since Feb. 28.
Rasmussen, who pounced on the puck after Philly defenseman Ivan Provorov fell on his rear end, skated in alone and beat Michal Neuvirth by taking the puck to the left side, then backhanding it through the five hole.
"I tried to go at (Provorov) pretty hard and tried to stress him a little bit," Rasmussen said. "I just saw him falling, then figured I'd try that move (on Neuvirth), and I was lucky that it went in."
Oh, the O zone time:
Two big problems with the Hawks' penalty kill have been the inability to win faceoffs and the inability to clear the puck out of their zone.
The Flyers were 2-for-4 on the power play Tuesday. On the 2 goals they scored, the puck was in their offensive zone 84 of 98 seconds, or 86 percent of the time.
The two times they failed, the Flyers had the puck in the O zone for just 118 of 240 seconds (49 percent).
Slap shots:
Artem Anisimov has won just 33.3 percent of his faceoffs (18 of 54). Nick Schmaltz has won 12 of 35 faceoffs (34.3 percent). … Brent Seabrook has 5 points (G, 4A) in the last two games.
