Voters, pay attention to tax policies

I am not opposed to paying taxes. We all need to pay our share to cover road repairs, police protection, fire safety and teachers. The realization that there is no limit on property tax increases is what really got me this year.

Our property taxes went up 30 percent, which equated to a $3,000 increase from 2014. According to our assessor's office, the reason for the large increase is not only because our assessed value increased. The real cause is the rise in our tax rate year after year.

That means officials have been spending and spending.

When I reached out to our congresswoman, our senator and tax assessor, all I got was empathy. Well, empathy does not pay the bills.

With Election Day around the corner, we all need to start paying more attention to what everyone stands for. Our officials cannot keep spending money and expect Illinois residents to keep paying more and more taxes.

Wake up, everyone, or eventually we'll be forced out of the state.
