Girls volleyball: Hersey tops Prospect in two sets

Defending Mid-Suburban League East champion Hersey remained one match behind Wheeling after defeating visiting Prospect 25-22, 25-21 at the Ken Carter Gymnasium on Tuesday in Arlington Heights.

The Huskies girls volleyball team improved to 14-4 and 3-1 in the East behind Wheeling (15-7, 4-0) which handed Hersey its conference loss.

Zoe Strozewski (9 kills), Kati Kaburov (6), Amy Morgan (5) and Maggie Reisel (3) led the attack for Hersey, which was set by Reisel with 21 assists.

Julia Coniglio was 16-of-17 serving for the hosts while teammate Liz Solans collected 19 digs and Coniglio 12. Strozewski also 4 blocks.

Seniors Paige Gerber (7 digs) directed the attack for Prospect (8-5, (2-2) handing out 14 assists with Maggie Porwit (6 kills), Kaela Myers (5) and Meghan Meredith (4) leading in kills.

Myers paced the back row with 15 digs followed by Val Thomas (110 and Porwit (10).

Palatine d. Schaumburg: Palatine raised its record to 10-2 and 4-0 in the MSL West with a 25-21, 25-22 over host Schaumburg (8-9, 1-3).

The Pirates were led on attack by Claire Chaplinsky (9 kills), Haley Holz (9) and Brooke Bauer (5), who also had 2 blocks. Alyssa Kroberg served 2 aces with 18 digs while Sydney Christiansen handed out 12 assists. Beverly Ryan added a block.

Mallory Gerber (5 kills, 2 blocks), Morgan Sterrett (4 kills) and Julia Spitelli (2 kills, 4 blocks) paced the Saxons' attack which was set by Jordyn Harberts (11 assists). Gabby Paelmo made 14 digs.

Barrington d. Conant: The visiting Fillies improved to 7-10 and 3-1 in the MSL West with a 25-22, 25-17 triumph over Conant (8-10, 1-3). Gabby Morris and Peyton Tilly led Barrington with 8 kills apiece while setter Chloe Layton scored 10 points and had 15 assists.

Buffalo Grove d. Elk Grove: Sasha Rozhko, Kim Barton and Kanella Kalyviaris each had 6 kills for the visiting Bison (3-11, 1-3) who won the MSL East match 25-20, 25-23.

Lindsey Prommer and Nadia Tarasova each added 4 kills while Kiarra Akiyoshi and Riley Cross each served 2 aces.

Hannah Schuler handed out 25 assists while Akiyoshi had 18 digs.

The Grenadiers (2-11, 0-4) received 4 kills apiece from Rachel Kandefer and Isabel Michniak while Lexi Chirbas handed out 8 assists and Mary Cronin 7.

Jenny Banak collected 20 digs and Johanna Duckmann 10.

Fremd d. Hoffman Estates: Bailey Hooker had 8 kills and Jess Mazur added 6 for host Fremd which improved to 3-1 in the MSL West with a 25-13, 25-14 triumph.

Karolina Sas served 5 aces for Fremd and Hooker had 3. Setter Natalie Freund delivered 15 assists.

Junior Janiah Fowler had 2 kills and 2 blocks for Hoffman (0-16, 0-4) which received 10 digs from Ashley Poland.

Downers Gr. S. d. Leyden: Downers Grove South posted a 28-26, 25-21 triumph over host Leyden which was led by senior outside hitter Patrycja Streminska (3 kills), senior setter Autumn McGee (9 kills, 3 aces) and senior middle hitter Natalie Payne (3 kills).

Maine East d. Maine West: Maine East scored a 25-16, 25-21 win over the Warriors (9-8, 0-3) in the Central Suburban North.

Jessica Riedl had 12 kills and 6 digs for West.

Harper d. College of DuPage: Top-ranked Harper (18-0, 5-0) improved to 54-3 in sets this season while posting a 25-17, 25-17, 18-25, 25-12 win.

Ellie Burzlaff (11 kills), Kathryn Novy (11) and Ariana Chelini (9) led the attack for the Hawks set by Katelyn Sommers (38 assists, 21 digs) who was 28-of-29 serving with 2 aces. Kayla Mayer had 33 digs.
