Boys golf: Mundelein, New Trier too close to split

Mundelein's boys golf team capped an unforgettable past eight days by earning a share of its own invitational championship Saturday at Steeple Chase Golf Course.

Both the Mustangs and New Trier tied with a score of 297. After fifth- and sixth-score tiebreakers couldn't determine the winner, the two teams were declared co-champs.

Vernon Hills (316), Lake Forest (325) and Evanston (337) rounded out the top five. Lakes (355) and Wauconda (367) finished seventh and eighth, respectively

New Trier's Justin Choi shot a blistering, 5-under-par 67 to capture medalist honors. Mundelein's Brett Parola was the runner-up with an even-par 72, while his teammates Ryan Magee (73) and Colin Wade (74) finished third and fourth. Brian Favia of Vernon Hills shot a 77 to take seventh. Mundelein's Zach Zentz was ninth with a 78. The Mustangs also needed Josh Peterson's 80 and Tyler White's 82.

Last Saturday, Mundelein won the Zion-Benton invite. The Mustangs followed up by winning Fremd's Inverness invitational and then won dual-meet showdowns against Libertyville and Lake Forest.

Vernon Hills' Saturday scores also included Joey Levitan's 78, Justin Park's 79 and Brendan Wise's 82.

Adam Nuxoll's 83 led Lakes, and Matt Szmajda had an 86 for Wauconda. Grayslake Central got an 83 from Tyler Hanson.
