Mount Prospect woman loses $9,000 in scam

A Mount Prospect woman was scammed out of $5,000 and gold jewelry valued at $4,000 with a false story about her daughter being in jail, police said.

The woman received a phone call around 5 p.m. Aug. 27 from a woman speaking Polish. The offender told the victim her daughter was in jail because she had almost killed someone in a car crash, and needed $77,000 to get out.

The resident told the caller she could only send the $5,000 and could offer gold jewelry. The scammer told her an attorney would pick up the payment. A man met her in her apartment lobby where she gave him the cash and jewelry. Only later did the victim realize she had been cheated, police said.
