Imrem: Bears sure do look like they're going to be awfully awful

The NFL's third weekend of exhibition games is supposed to be the most revealing.

Here are some observations from the Bears' 23-7 loss to the Chiefs Saturday at Soldier Field.

• In technical terms, the Bears sure do look like they're going to be awfully awful.

• Kyle Long and the Bears' other injured players should go directly to the Hall of Fame if they can make this team respectable when they return to the lineup.

• Nobody cares about the Bears' fourth-string quarterback until he gets hurt like Connor Shaw did in the fourth quarter.

• The Bears held their own against the Chiefs except for offense, defense and special teams.

• "We've got the talent to do it," Bears head coach John Fox said. "Now we just have to execute better and more consistently." Yeah, that's all.

• Just guessing, but it's probably not a good sign for the Bears that when the starters played during most of the first half, the Chiefs had advantages of 16-2 in first downs, 239-18 in total yards and 21:54-8:06 in time of possession.

• It's also probably not a good sign that the huge inflatable Bear remained in a state of collapse before the opening kickoff.

• Preseason games don't matter until a team plays like the Bears did against the Chiefs.

• Did we mention that the Bears looked like they're destined to be awfully awful?

• The guys who removed the rain-soaked tarp before the game did a better job on the field than the Bears did.

• Looking down from the press box, it was easy to see that Bears fans have yet to transition their jersey tops from Matt Forte to Jeremy Langford.

• Bears linebacker Pernell McPhee … where have you gone, a defense turns its weary eyes to you?

• Just when it looked like the Bears wouldn't score in Soldier Field this season, Robbie Gould kicked a 48-yard field goal early in the third quarter … Oh no, he missed it wide left.

• The Bears did score a touchdown with 5:40 left in the fourth quarter, beating the over-under on their first home points by three months.

• The longer the first team played, the more it looked like the Bears really are going to be awfully awful this season.

• There were enough unrecognizable names on the Bears' depth chart to fill the thousands of empty seats in Soldier Field on this day.

• The referee should keep his mic on so fans can hear him conferring with the other officials.

• Hall of Fame defensive lineman Dan Hampton sat in the back row of the press box and even at age 58 looked like he'd be the Bears' best player at any position, even quarterback, if they'd let him suit up.

• Imprinted on the field was an NFL logo with the message "PLAY FOOTBALL" but they left out "CAUTION: PLAYING THIS GAME MIGHT BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH."

• Alshon Jeffery played into the third quarter and suffered zero injuries for a change.

• Bears fans, just like all fans of all teams, look foolish mugging for five seconds of fame on the video board.

• "We've still got some time to get better," Bears quarterback Jay Cutler said, perhaps meaning a few more years of the John Fox/Ryan Pace roster rebuild roster.

• But this year it sure does look like the Bears are going to be awfully awful.
