Second-match setback for Mundelein at Barrington

Mundelein's girls volleyball team opened the season with a win over Wauconda and was trying for a 2-0 start against host Barrington on Thursday night.

The Fillies proved too much, however, outlasting the Mustangs 25-16, 23-25, 25-16 in the nonconference match.

Sidney Brunkow and Katherine East each had 5 kills for Mundelein (1-1). The Mustangs' other contributors included McKenzie Theis (3 blocks), Tess Pribyl (2 aces), Taylor Heath (2 aces), Mackenzie Linane (11 assists), Amanda Bogseth (2 blocks) and Faith Krabbe (2 blocks).

Stevenson d. Carmel: Jori Radtke racked up 9 kills, 3 aces and 5 digs, and the visiting Patriots defeated Carmel 25-15, 25-16 in nonconference action.

Sophie Sorenson added 4 kills, and Taylor Erickson contributed 3 aces and 5 digs for Stevenson (2-0). Alex Cuc was 39-of-41 setting with 15 assists for the Patriots, Chloe Robinson served 2 aces, and Sarah Bute had 2 solo blocks.

"This was a hard lesson that our young team needed," Carmel coach David Pazely said after his Corsairs fell to 1-1. "While we battled well early, Stevenson outplayed us late in each game."

Buffalo Grove d. Grayslake Central: The Rams fell 25-16, 25-19 in their season opener.

Grayslake Central was led by Morgan Anderberg (4 kills, 8 digs) and Cassidy Beshel (4 kills, 3 blocks).

Regina d. Vernon Hills: The Cougars dropped the nonconference match 25-22, 25-18, despite 4 kills apiece from Kayla Caudle and Taylor Harte.

Harte also had 9 digs, while Caralynn Orbell dished out 15 assists.
