Streamwood teen arrested in St. Charles robbery

St. Charles police arrested an 18-year-old Streamwood man early Sunday on allegations he held up a 7-11 convenience store with a starter pistol, authorities said.

Kevin J. Hamilton, of the 3100 block of Medford Court, faces one count of armed robbery stemming from the stickup police say occurred about 3:45 a.m. at the store at 1705 W. Main St.

According to police, a man entered the store alone, pulled out what appeared to be a handgun and demanded money from the cash register. The clerk was not harmed and no one else was in the store at the time, police said.

With the help of an Elgin Police Department dog, officers tracked the robber to the door of an apartment building in the 1600 block of Indiana Street and took four people there to the police station for questioning, police said.

Three of them later were released without charges, police said. The fourth, identified as Hamilton, was charged and taken to the Kane County jail, where he was awaiting an appearance in bond court. If convicted of armed robbery, he faces up to 30 years in prison.

A search of the a tree line near the Indiana Street apartment turned up a silver starter pistol believed to be used in the robbery, police said.

Investigators are working with the 7-11 store to determine the amount of money that was taken.
