Delegate Diary: Cubs jersey 'the epitome of hope'

State Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia of Aurora has been to the last few Democratic conventions, often noticeable on TV at home.

She's the one wearing the Cubs jersey.

"For one, it symbolizes where I'm from," she said.

The last two conventions, Chapa LaVia served as a state delegation whip, which means she's tasked with keeping the large Illinois group together and making sure people get where they need to be. The jersey helped her stand out.

Chapa LaVia isn't a whip this year, but she's still wearing the Cubs jersey.

"It's the epitome of hope," she said.

Chapa LaVia has been an Illinois House lawmaker for more than a dozen years and was elected in the March primary to be a convention delegate for nominee Hillary Clinton.

Is Chapa LaVia glad she's not a whip at this convention, which has been marked by boos from delegates upset by Clinton getting the nomination over Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders?

"Absolutely not," she said. "Everybody has the right to voice their opinion in this democracy. We're not all lemmings."
