Mount Prospect unearths time capsule to mark 100th anniversary

The Mount Prospect Centennial Celebration began at 10 a.m. Saturday with the unearthing of a time capsule filled with memorabilia from both the 50th anniversary celebration in 1966 and the 75th anniversary in 1992.

The capsule, buried on May 19, 1993, at the conclusion of the 75th anniversary celebration, was unearthed by Pipe View America of Schaumburg from its resting place just west of the Public Safety Building at 112 E. Northwest Hwy.

Former Mayor Gerald "Skip" Farley read from the letter that he wrote 25 years ago, but because of the fragile nature of the items inside, opening of the capsule was delayed until it can be done under archival conditions.

After the ceremony, the capsule, along with a list of its contents, was put on display at the Mount Prospect Downtown Block Party, an annual celebration of summer.

The anniversary will be marked by various events over the next year. More information is on the centennial website, mountprospect100.com.
