Schaumburg Park District triathlon, duathlon July 17

The Schaumburg Park District's annual triathlon and duathlon return Sunday, July 17, and organizers say they will provide a great local opportunity for beginners to try their hand at one of these endurance events alongside experienced triathletes.

The Splash, Pedal, Dash Triathlon and Dash, Pedal, Dash Duathlon are sponsored by Amita Health and Dick Pond Athletics.

The races will begin at 6:30 a.m. at Meinecke Recreation Center, 220 E. Weathersfield Way. Check-in, chip assignment, body marking and packet pickup start at 5:15 a.m.

The triathlon includes a 400-meter swim, 12.8-mile bike ride and 5K run. The duathlon includes a 5K run, followed by a 12.8-mile bike ride and then another 5K run.

"It's an exciting event, which attracts many local athletes and spectators," said Alyssa Danca, the park district's fitness coordinator. "Because the swim portion takes place in a pool, this a great triathlon for beginners."

Both races are chip-timed, include one transition area and end at Meinecke Recreation Center.

Multiple divisions are available for ages 15 and older. All participants will receive a technical T-shirt and a custom finisher's medal.

The cost is $55 for registration before July 7, and $65 between July 8 and the registration deadline July 14. Participants must register at Active.com.
