Golf outing to support homeless veterans

Those who like to golf or who just enjoy a little Texas barbecue can pursue their interests while helping military veterans who have fallen on hard times.

The Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans' 11th annual Golf Outing and Texas BBQ Fundraiser will be Sunday, Aug. 28, at Klein Creek Golf Club, 1N333 Pleasant Hill Road, Winfield. The day features 18 holes of golf in a team scramble format beginning with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. A Texas barbecue buffet dinner follows golf at 6 p.m.

"Since the inaugural event in 2006, the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans Golf Outing has raised close to $250,000 in support of our mission to help homeless and at-risk veterans regain self-sufficiency," said Bob Adams, shelter co-founder and board president. "The golf is again limited to the first 144 paid golfers, so we encourage everyone who wants to join us in August to sign up now.

"We also ask interested businesses and individuals to help sponsor our event, so that every dollar we raise can go directly to helping at-risk veterans and their families," Adams added. "There is no better way to support these heroes who have served our nation."

Golfers can register online at helpaveteran.org. The cost, which includes 18 holes of golf and a barbecue dinner, is $545 per foursome or $145 for an individual golfer. A discounted rate of $525 per foursome or $135 for an individual golfer is available for those signing up online and for those who register by phone by Aug. 1. A limited number of dinner-only reservations are available for $50.

Event and hole sponsorships are available, and organizers are accepting donations of auction and raffle items. Raffle tickets are also available. For information, contact Lynne Rowe at (630) 871-8387 or lynne@mshv.org.
