Become a foster family for Anderson Animal Shelter

Anderson Animal Shelter in South Elgin will host a "Foster Open House" from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, at the shelter, 1000 S. LaFox (Route 31). To RSVP for the open house, email foster@andersonanimalshelter.org or call (847) 697-2880, ext. 35.

Attendees can learn more about becoming a foster family for the shelter animals.

This is also a chance for foster parents to connect with other foster volunteers.

The shelter needs foster homes to provide care for puppies and adult dogs transported to Anderson from partner groups in Oklahoma. The dogs range in age from newborn pups who usually have their mom with them, to weaned pups and adults who just need to stay in their foster home for two weeks so the shelter can make sure they're healthy. Shelter staff will vaccinate, deworm and provide flea/tick treatments. Once they're old enough, the shelter veterinarian will spay or neuter them, and then they'll be ready to come back to the shelter for adoption.

Each spring, summer and fall, it is "kitty season" and the South Elgin shelter needs foster homes to care for these feline babies until they are ready for adoption, usually about two weeks. During "kitty season," they may get more than a litter of kittens each day so they need lots of fosters. Anderson Animal Shelter will provide all the veterinary care, food and as many of the supplies as they have available.
