Measure to let Elgin school district CEO be superintendent delayed
Elgin Area School District U-46 leaders will have to wait a little longer to see if they can consider CEO Tony Sanders to take on superintendent duties.
State Rep. Rita Mayfield, a Waukegan Democrat, said the plan that would relax state requirements that superintendents be certified educators to allow Sanders to be considered for the role is an example of "favoritism and cronyism."
She blocked the legislation from being called for a House committee vote Thursday, holding it up.
Sanders "is a very good person, very well-liked. But he does not have the credentials to be superintendent," she said.
Former Community Unit District 300 Superintendent Kenneth Arndt serves as U-46's interim superintendent, and board members say they'd like to consider Sanders for the full-time role.
State Rep. Fred Crespo, a Hoffman Estates Democrat who sponsored the plan, says he'll look for another way to get it approved.
"We have support on the House floor to pass it," he said. "It's something that's very important to the district. I'm not going to get into a fight with anyone on the committee."
State Sen. Mike Noland, an Elgin Democrat, is sponsoring similar legislation in the Senate.
