Lots to learn about going green

Mark your calendars for April 20 and April 22. The ECC and the City of Elgin Sustainability Expo from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 20. The Earth Day event at Hawthorne Hill Nature Center is from 4 to 7 p.m. April 22.

Both have activities for kids and are free, but even more important there are lots of things to learn about going green. News about greenhouse gas emissions says that the numbers are still rising, and that we will never see it less than 400 ppm again in our lifetimes. 350 PPM is the goal for safety for life - sustainability. Extreme weather events continue, and the coastal cities are now in more danger - especially Miami which now has seawater on its streets regularly. The theme of the ECC Expo is to save the coastal cities.

The ECC/Elgin Sustainability Expo is focusing on the "42 Steps You Can Take to Care for the Earth", from the easy steps, like using cfls and LED light bulbs, to turning the heat down/air conditioning up, to eating less red meat, more veggies, and flying less. Dave and I are taking the train on our next vacation. Take the train to Chicago. Save energy. Lots to know, find out about. ECC students along with Elgin Green Groups (EGG350) are putting on this Expo at the ECC Gymnasium.

Also on Earth Day at Hawthorne Hill Nature Center, you will find many things we can all do. It all adds up and helps. We can work together on this. Be a green community.
