Four more wholesalers allege Caputo owes grocery bills

Four other Chicago produce wholesalers have added their names to a lawsuit alleging Des Plaines-based Joe Caputo & Sons failed to pay its own grocery bills.

Strube Celery & Vegetable Co., La Galera Produce, City Wide Produce Distributors and Olympic Wholesale Produce say they are owed more than $1 million by Caputo for unpaid produce since last August. On Feb. 9, Anthony Marano Co. was the first to file suit against Caputo, alleging the company did not pay for $3.6 million worth of produce.

Caputo stores in Elk Grove Village, Arlington Heights and Northbrook have closed, though the company says its stores in Des Plaines, Algonquin and Palatine "remain strong."

The parties are due in court again March 10.
