Montgomery showing of film 'DamNation' set for March 10

Has the conversation changed on the benefit of building dams and disrupting river flows? The subject of dam removal and the role dams have played is the topic of the 2014 documentary film "DamNation," to be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 10, at the Montgomery Village Hall.

This special screening is sponsored by The Conservation Foundation and the village of Montgomery.

With discussions of dams and dam removal becoming more frequent, "DamNation" addresses the role dams play in local and national wayterways. Removal of every dam is not the goal, but informing communities about their local dams will help them decide if dam removal is the best option to improve the health of rivers and surrounding communities.

The removal of several dams along the Fox River has resulted in noticeable improvements by allowing the river to flow freely, reducing the amount of algae and increasing healthy oxygen levels.

Fisheries biologist Steve Pescitelli from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources will be there to talk about local streams and dams, and fish populations and habitat.

Everyone is welcome to this free film showing; reservations are not necessary. The film will be shown in the boardroom at the Montgomery Village Hall, 200 N. River St. The film's trailer can be viewed at the website here.
