Metra Union Pacific West Line resumes normal schedule

After two days of misery following a fire that damaged switches and signals on the UP West Line, the route is back in business.

"Union Pacific has completed repairs to a signal facility that was damaged by a fire Tuesday and we now expect to run a normal weekday schedule on the UP West Line today," spokesman Michael Gillis said.

The fire occurred early Tuesday morning at a facility that operates signals and switches for a two-mile section of track.

Because of the damage, speeds had been reduced between the Melrose Park and Berkeley stations and engineers were required to stop and obtain clearance before entering the area, contributing to the delays.

But today's trains should be back on schedule, Gillis said.
