Two Metra's UP West Line trains canceled for Thursday

Two Metra Union Pacific West Line trains have been canceled for the morning rush Thursday, but officials estimate the service - disrupted as a result of a fire on Tuesday - will be back to normal by midday.

Metra officials apologized for the issues and advised passengers to check for alerts and schedule changes at metrarail.com/metra/en/home.html.

Riders encountered delays and some trains being canceled for the afternoon rush Wednesday as workers repaired signals and switches knocked out by Tuesday's electrical fire.

Trains ran a maximum of 20 minutes late because of speed reductions between Melrose Park and Berkeley stations. Federal regulations also require engineers to stop and obtain clearance before entering the area.

The fire occurred early Tuesday morning at a facility that operates signals and switches for a two-mile section of track.
