Plank Road Tap Room teams up with Lagunitas to fight childhood cancer
ELGIN, Ill., February 2, 2016 - Beer goes down better for a good cause. Alan and Breanne Moreno, owners of the Plank Road Tap Room, know a lot about good beer and good causes. Her brother, Tyler Christiansen, is a survivor of neuroblastoma, a solid tumor pediatric cancer most common in infants and toddlers. So, for the entire month of February, the Morenos will donate $1 for every Lagunitas draft pour sold at their log cabin-style pub to the Children's Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation.
Like other childhood cancers, neuroblastoma research receives a fraction of the government and private funding that adult cancers do. The Morenos want to do their part.
In addition to the $1 per pour donation, on Saturday, Feb. 27, Plank Road Tap Room, 39W149 Plank Road in Elgin, will host a special night with CNCF co-founder and President Pat Tallungan and donate all the proceeds from a very special keg of Lagunitas' High West-ified Imperial Coffee Stout, a barrel-aged beer released once a year. The keg is being donated by Lagunitas' corporate office.
"Even if that keg lasts into March, every penny of those proceeds will go to CNCF," said Alan Moreno.
The foundation was co-founded in 2000 by Tallungan, who lost her son, Nicholas, to the disease at age 10. The disease manifests as solid tumors in the head, neck, chest, pelvis or abdomen and has a 40-percent survival rate in advanced stages. It supports research, clinical trials and education programs to raise awareness, and connects families with the leading neuroblastoma doctors at its annual parent medical conference.
Moreno says he plans to carry no less than three, and possibly four, Lagunitas varietals during the month of February.
"I'm humbled that a family that has been personally affected by this disease would make a monthlong commitment like this to raise money and awareness about the disease," Tallungan said. "Plank Road Tap is known for its impressive list of beers imported from around the world. But in February, I hope that patrons will line up for Lagunitas, because children suffering from neuroblastoma need our help."
