Driver flees after hitting Fox Lake house

A car struck a house and its gas meter late Tuesday afternoon in Fox Lake, causing a gas leak, before the driver fled the scene, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 4:30 p.m. at a two-story single family home on the 100 block of Lakeview Avenue, according to Capt. Brent Connelly of the Fox Lake Fire Protection District.

There were no injuries to the occupants of the home, which is located about 100 yards from the shore of Fox Lake.

There was little structural damage to the house, but the vehicle's impact did cause some piping of the gas meter to break off, Connelly said.

"Gas was coming out of the meter quite strongly," he said. "We did have to ventilate the structure after the gas was turned off."

An ambulance that responded was on the way back when it was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle at 5:12 p.m. near Oak Street and Route 12, but Connelly was unable to confirm whether it was the same vehicle from the first crash.

The ambulance was stopped on Oak Street, waiting for a train to pass, when the vehicle struck its driver's side. No one was injured, Connelly said.

Connelly didn't know whether Fox Lake police were able to find the hit-and-run driver or drivers, and police didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.
