Libertyville students explore career choices

Fourth-grader Luke Kazian was handcuffed by Wauconda Police Detective Kevin Wich, but not because he did anything wrong - it was Career Day at Rockland School in Libertyville.

Twenty-two professionals, many Rockland parents, gave talks to students during five sessions Friday morning. Presenters included a zookeeper, dance instructor, an acupuncturist, a comic book illustrator, a pilot, a police officer and many others.

Kindergarten teacher Dale List started the program 14 years ago, and it has become an annual event at the school.

"A study shows that by fifth grade if a student is not exposed to a career, they will not choose that career in their lifetime," List said.

Every 30 minutes, students from first to fifth grades traveled from room to room as they explored various professions. Students were allowed to pick five professions to learn about.

The program was sponsored by the Rockland Family Association.
