Local Early Response Team goes to Mississippi

Members of a local Early Response team were invited to Holly Springs in north central Mississippi to help recovery efforts after tornadoes and heavy rains hit the area.

The Lutheran Early Response Team, equipped with chain saws, ATVs and a tractor, arrived Jan. 3 and spent several days helping residents of the area clean up their property, cut and remove damaged trees, and retrieve personal objects. They worked with members of other early response teams from 22 different states, mainly from the Midwest, South and East.

The effort was coordinated by a pastor from Alabama who had worked with members of the local team on cleanup efforts after tornadoes hit parts of Northern Illinois.

The Lutheran Early Response Team (L.E.R.T.) has been in existence for several years and the St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Hampshire chapter was organized in early 2015. It includes members and nonmembers who want to help people recover from these devastating storms.

They have had several opportunities to hone their skills by aiding in several tornado recoveries in Northern Illinois, including Rochelle, Coal City, Fairview, and Amboy/Sublet. Team members have received training in use of chain saws, proper procedures for cleaning out destroyed homes, and food preparation for workers.

If you would like to assist others in recovering from natural disasters, call St. Peter's church office at (847) 464-5721. All types of skills are needed so if you cannot operate equipment there are other things you can do to assist.
