Punch Bowl Social to open in Schaumburg Saturday

Schaumburg's new Punch Bowl Social restaurant and entertainment venue will combine its grand opening with a charity fundraiser from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, on the former site of John Barleycorn at 1100 American Lane.

A $10 general admission ticket includes access to a menu sampling, punch tasting, bowling, karaoke, darts, ping-pong, '80s arcade games and a live performance by DJ Bam Bam and DJ Nick Rockwell.

All proceeds from the event will benefit SOS Children's Villages.

Punch Bowl Social already has locations in Denver, Detroit, Austin and Portland, Oregon, and is planning a site in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood in the near future.

According to its website: "Punch Bowl Social has eliminated having to choose between respectable food and beverage, and a great social experience. Punch Bowl brings 'old school' entertainment, culinary refinement, and a modern beverage program under one roof."

After Saturday night's special event, normal hours will be 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The restaurant promotes itself as being family friendly until 10 p.m. each night.

The John Barleycorn restaurant that originally occupied the 22,000-square-foot building opened in 2008 but ceased day-to-day operations in June 2013. For a time after that it was an exclusively special-events venue before transforming into a short-lived Old Crow Smokehouse.

The building had been vacant for a few months before the plan for Punch Bowl Social was approved by Schaumburg officials in April.
