Kane extends record-setting streak, but Hawks collapse in OT

Patrick Kane extended his points streak to 19 games, setting the record for an American-born player during the Blackhawks' 3-2 overtime loss in Los Angeles on Saturday night.

Kane passed Phil Kessel and former Blackhawk Eddie Olczyk when he snapped a shot past Jonathan Quick at the 11:10 mark of the first period to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. The Hawks lost when Marian Gaborik scored on a breakaway 2:04 into a thrilling, back-and-forth OT.

Between the first and second periods, Olczyk asked Kane what it meant to set the record.

“It's pretty special,” Kane said, “especially when you look at who held the 18-game point record. Some elite company with yourself and my good buddy Phil Kessel up there. I have the utmost respect for both of you guys. You guys have both had tremendous careers so just to be in the same sentence with both of you is special enough for me.

“But to do it for one more game is pretty cool, especially when you look at so many great American players that have played the game.”

With the Hawks on the power play, Duncan Keith poked the puck away from Dustin Brown and set Kane up about 10 feet in front of Quick. After the puck whizzed by Quick, Kane pumped his fist and let out a primal scream.

“As you can see I was pretty excited,” Kane said. “I was probably in my own little world after that one. It was a good feeling.”

The Hawks took a 2-0 thanks to Niklas Hjalmarsson's first goal of the season at the 12:56 mark of the second period.

The Kings stormed back, though, with goals by Jeff Carter (52 seconds into the third) and Gaborik (at 14:05).

Gaborik's goal came after Brent Seabrook inexplicably lost the puck in the middle of the Hawks' offensive zone. Anze Kopitar then gained control and flicked a pass to Gaborik, who whipped it past Scott Darling.

Darling came up big all night for the Hawks, making 33 saves.

As for Kane, he can now set his sights on the Blackhawks' team record, which is 21 games and is held by Bobby Hull. If Kane breaks the record, it would come on Sunday, Dec. 6 against Winnipeg at the United Center.

Kane, who has 11 goals and 20 assists during the streak, barely extended his streak to 18 games Friday night. He assisted on Duncan Keith's game-tying goal with 26.6 seconds remaining in regulation during the Hawks' 3-2 overtime victory. Artem Anisimov notched the game-winner in OT after taking a perfect pass from Seabrook.

It was an uneven road trip for the Hawks in terms of their play on the ice, but the end results were solid as they went 3-1-2 to improve to 13-8-3 overall. The Hawks, whose next game is at the United Center against Minnesota on Tuesday, are now in third place in the Central Division, 4 points behind second-place St. Louis.
