Bears rookie receiver Kevin White cleared for practice

The Chicago Bears have opened the practice window for rookie wide receiver Kevin White, their first-round pick, and they have three weeks to add him to the 53-man roster or place him on season-ending injured reserve.

The 6-foot-3, 217-pound White had surgery in August to stabilize the stress fractures in his lower left leg that have prevented him from a full practice since off-season OTAs (organized team activities).

White only stretched with the team Tuesday, but he seemed pleased to have taken the latest step on his comeback trail.

"Not back to normal, not just yet," White said. "But it's definitely better than it was two weeks ago or than it was last week.

"It's getting stronger, and I'm getting more comfortable with it. So I guess that's all I can ask for. I want to get a lot of strength back in my quad, and just get comfortable with running routes again."

White was the seventh overall draft pick this year after catching 109 passes for 1,447 yards (13.3-yard average) and 10 touchdowns in his final season at West Virginia. He is not expected to do much in the early stages of his return to practice and seems like a longshot to play this year.

"He's not ready to play at this minute, but he's able to be out here and participate," coach John Fox said. "We'll evaluate that day to day.

White would like to play this season, but the Bears are likely to use the full 21 days before making a decision.

"There's a chance," White said. "I'm not closing the door on anything. I've just got to be smart with it. If I'm feeling good and I'm ready to go, then I guess we'll have to see.

"(There) is still a little discomfort here and there. But it's not like excruciating pain like it used to be."

Perfect planning:

Quarterback Jay Cutler's wife, Kristin Cavallari, delivered their third child and first daughter, Saylor James, on Monday afternoon.

Cutler was congratulated and asked if he was doing OK managing his time while he prepares for the Green Bay Packers.

"Luckily Kristin has done about 99 percent of it," the quarterback said. "My one percent, I don't think is really going to drag me down that much. But thank you."

Players were off Monday, so the baby's timing was impeccable.

"It could have been worse," Cutler said. "She cooperated a little bit for us."

Not worth remembering:

The Bears' last trip to Lambeau Field resulted in the 55-14 stomping they absorbed on a nationally televised Sunday night game.

"I kind of forgot that game," running back Matt Forte said. "It was embarrassing. It's time that the Bears stop going up there and losing games like that. We just have to play better than we did last year."

He's right up there:

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was asked to rank the Packers' Aaron Rodgers among the quarterbacks he has faced in 28 years as an NFL coach.

"I don't know if he's the best," Fangio said. "But there's nobody better."

Injury update:

Wide receiver Eddie Royal (knee), running back Ka'Deem Carey (concussion) and safety Antrel Rolle (knee) did not practice.

Tight end Martellus Bennett (ribs), running back Matt Forte (knee), wide receiver Alshon Jeffery (groin), linebackers Pernell McPhee (knee) and LaRoy Reynolds (knee) and safety Sherrod Martin (neck) were limited.

Defensive lineman Jarvis Jenkins (chest) and wide receiver Marquess Wilson (groin) were full participants.

Personnel moves:

Linebacker Danny Mason and quarterback Justin Worley were added to the practice squad.

Mason entered the NFL in January with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent out of Texas A&M-Commerce. Worley is an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee.
