Gun buy-back deals are not the answer

Mayor Rahm Emanuel is proposing to spend $250,000 of taxpayer money to fund a gun buyback program. The mayor says the program is designed to get illegal guns off the cities streets.

Huh? Does anyone think that gangbangers will rush to turn in their guns in return for a $100 check. What is far more likely is that law-abiding citizens will turn in grandpa's shotgun that has been rusting away in the basement for years.

No reasonable person would deny that we need to disarm gangbangers and the mentally ill but these buyback programS are not the answer. Surely a coalition of law enforcement officials and mental health professionals with input from those people most affected by gun violence can come up with more creative solutions.
