Mt. Prospect leaders honor departing fire chief

Mount Prospect village leaders bid a heartfelt farewell to John Malcolm, who is stepping down as the village's fire chief to take the same position in Lake Zurich.

Taking turns, Mayor Arlene Juracek and village trustees read a resolution acknowledging Malcolm's contributions to the village.

Trustees praised Malcolm, a 29-year veteran of the department, for his work, including adjusting to staffing cuts in 2010, the year he became chief. Trustee Michael Zadel noted that Malcolm secured a federal grant that enabled the department to hire six new firefighters.

"We really don't want to lose you," Trustee Richard Rogers added. "I know that you're going to be successful no matter where you go and what you do. So I'm wishing you the very best. And I'm sad to see you leave Mount Prospect."

Often holding back tears, an emotional Malcolm expressed his gratitude to the village.

"I'm a fireman in Mount Prospect, and that's what I'm really proud of," he said.

Turning around to address his firefighters, he added, "I have enjoyed working with all of you. I have learned so much from all of you."

Deputy Chief Brian Lambel will take over as interim chief.
