Do we need 21 city departments?

Last week I observed a City of St. Charles truck with Department of Meters and Readings Division proudly emblazoned on the shiny truck, probably washed daily by the Department of Vehicle services, I wondered?

So I went to the city's website, and sure enough there are 21 separate divisions or departments within the city. Each no doubt with their own highly paid department manager, and quite likely part of a public sector union?

No wonder our taxes are so high. Twenty-one departments, really? The department of Economic Development, yes it really exists, sure has done a great job with the Quad, also known as Charlestowne Mall 2.0. I bet the number of departments and managers could be reduced by 75 percent and we would never miss a beat. Oh, but those union jobs?
