Dallas Stars at a glance

DALLAS STARS

LAST SEASON: 41-31-10, 92 points. Sixth place in Central Division.

COACH: Lindy Ruff (third season, 18th NHL season).

ADDED: F Patrick Sharp, D Johnny Oduya, G Antti Niemi.

LOST: D Trevor Daley, F Ryan Garbutt, F Erik Cole, F Shawn Horcoff.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Tyler Seguin. Although Jamie Benn won the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL's leading scorer with a rash of points in the final few games, Seguin was the Dallas player most likely to win that award with two months left in the season. He missed 10 games with a knee injury, and the Stars lost seven of the first eight when he was sidelined. That slump left them too far behind for a late surge to get them in the playoffs. The line of Seguin, Benn and Sharp has a chance to be among the league's best.

OUTLOOK: Just like a year ago, the Stars are a trendy pick to make a playoff run because of the offseason moves. Health was an issue last season, with Benn playing through hip problems almost from start to finish and young Russian forward Valeri Nichushkin playing just eight games because of hip surgery. The goalie tandem of Kari Lehtonen and Niemi could determine how far the Stars go.
