Heart failure support group to learn about low-sodium diet

Elgin, Ill. - The next meeting of Advocate Sherman Hospital's new heart failure support group will take place Oct. 8.

As a part of the support group, participants will learn tips to better manage their heart health, and friends, family members and caregivers are encouraged to attend.

The meeting will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, in the lower-level conference room 6 at the hospital, 1425 N. Randall Road, Elgin. The topic will be following a low-sodium diet while dining out.

During the meeting, attendees learn ways to make better food selections while eating out, sample low sodium snacks and learn simple meals to prepare at home.

About 5.1 million people in the U.S. have heart failure, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About half of people who develop heart failure die within five years of diagnosis.

Those with coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes are at a higher risk for heart failure, according to the CDC. Smoking, eating foods high in fat, cholesterol and sodium, not getting enough physical activity, and obesity also increase a person's risk for heart failure.

Registration for the free event is required, and participants will also have the chance to win raffle prizes. A Spanish interpreter will also be available.
