Homeschool Book Swap Coming to Library

The Northbrook Public Library will host a Homeschool Book Swap on Saturday, October 17 from 9-11am in the Youth Services Activity Room.

The Homeschool Book Swap is the first event of its kind at the Library. Jennifer Townsley, a Youth Services library assistant, wanted to create the event to help homeschoolers renew their materials while keeping costs down.

"I homeschool my son, and often find that I have materials left over at the end of our school year that are no longer useful," said Townsley. "Since these items can be costly, I thought it would be nice to offer the chance for homeschoolers to share with others."

Homeschoolers with unwanted academic materials such as workbooks, textbooks, educational games, and flashcards will be able to donate them to the Library from October 11-16. On October 17, book swap attendees can browse tables of donated materials to pick up new books and resources for their collection at no cost.

"I hope participants will benefit by finding gently used things that can be helpful in their own homeschool teaching," said Townsley. "I also hope homeschool parents will use [the Homeschool Book Swap] to discuss curriculum and materials that are particularly helpful in their own homeschool classrooms."

While the book swap is the latest in the Library's efforts to help homeschooling families, the Library retains many other resources that homeschoolers will find helpful.

"We have great databases and eResources that provide information on many topics like history and science, most of which can be accessed from home with a library card," said Amanda Margis, Youth Services Assistant Manager. "We also have a wide selection of print materials and eBooks that can supplement a range of lessons and curriculums."

The Northbrook Public Library welcomes all area homeschoolers to the book swap.
