Batavia's Books Between Bites to host first program Sept. 17

Batavia's popular monthly noontime book program, Books Between Bites, announces the schedule for its 29th season, which begins Sept. 17.

The series will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave. The public is invited to attend these free programs presented September through May on the third Thursday of the month.

The 2015-2016 season begins Thursday, Sept. 17, with Batavia author Steven Heronemus. People with ALS are often described as having a normal mind trapped in a shell of a body. In "Shells: Sustained by Grace Within the Tempest," Heronemus turns this image around, using seashells as metaphors for habits that reveal the joy and beauty of life no matter what the circumstance. He has lived with ALS since 2003, yet is happier than ever. He finds fulfillment in relationships, building opportunities for those living with disabilities, being an advocate, and writing. He has been recognized with several awards for community service. Books will be available for sale and signing.

The rest of the season includes new and returning program presenters and a second author. Batavia Unit District 101 Superintendent Lisa Hichens is welcomed to the program for the first time on Oct. 15. Richard Munson, author of a book about Colonel George Fabyan, presents Nov. 19. Roger Breisch of Batavia returns to the program on Dec. 17.

The series continues in 2016 with another book review by Barbara Kalina of Batavia on Jan. 21. Mayor Jeff Schielke presents his 29th annual program on Feb. 18. Sports fans will enjoy the return of ESPN's Lester Munson on March 17. New to the program, on April 21, is Maureen Jakubowski of Batavia. The season concludes with the return on longtime presenter Rick Kogan of the Chicago Tribune and WGN Radio on May 19. The program is held in the large Founders Room located on the library's main level. Reservations are not required. Parking is available in the lot just south and adjacent to the library.

Attendees are invited to bring their lunch and eat as they enjoy the program and discussion. Lunch items, beverages and baked goods can be purchased at Chapters Coffee House & Café, located just inside the library and adjacent to the meeting room. To pre-order for pickup just before the program, call (630) 406-8005.

Books Between Bites was established in Batavia in 1987 by the late Lee C. Moorehead. The program has been continued by Moorehead's wife, Betty, and his daughter, Becky Hoag, in partnership and co-sponsorship with George H. Scheetz and Stacey Peterson of Batavia Public Library.
