Girls volleyball: Coaching wins for Prospect's Gerber, Maine West's Cott
The area's two newest girls volleyball coaches enjoyed winning debuts on Tuesday night.
Prospect's Laura Gerber watched her Knights take a 25-22, 25-14 victory at Maine South, where she was a standout volleyball player herself.
Maggie Porwitt put down 9 kills for Prospect while Brenda Kendziera and Kaeli Myers each had 4.
Nikki Giammarino collected 11 digs and Michelle Haaning handed out 20 assists with 5 digs.
Sammy Withey (5 aces) and Mary Mazurek each chipped in a pair of kills for the Knights.
Maine West d. Maine South: Maine West first-year coach Mike Cott saw his Warriors notch a 25-14, 25-17 victory over visiting Elk Grove.
Allison Grzebien led the way for West with 5 kills and 6 digs. Junior Lee Harty recorded 5 kills and 7 digs while senior Jordan Hart chipped in 4 kills and 6 digs.
Cott has been the head coach for the Niles North girls volleyball team the past seven years.
Elk Grove was paced by Carly Crothers (3 kills, 10 digs, 1 ace), Alex Masnica (8 digs, 3 assists), Mary Cronin (2 assist) and Kylie Ostling (1 block).
