Music notes: Kick it with Fletcher Rockwell

Fletcher Rockwell at the Base

Down-home stories about life in the Midwest lie just beneath the foot-stomping fun of Fletcher Rockwell's alt.country exterior. Taking the current indie-folksy musical landscape and painting it with a hard-rock palette and a smattering of grit is the band's specialty. With its rock rhythms and hearty harmonies, the band's latest album, "Urban Heartland," has played a big part in the soundtrack of my summer, but the live shows are where the magic really happens. 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at BaseCamp Pub & Eatery, 5750 Lakeside Drive, Lisle. $5. (331) 777-4712 or basecamppub.com.

Hey Man, Nice Set

Chances are if you listened to mid- and late-'90s radio, you've stumbled across Candlebox and Filter once or twice. While they're a lot less ubiquitous than they were back in their "Far Behind" and "Take A Picture" days, the bands are still rocking hard. Sideouts Bar & Eatery is bringing them to Island Lake for the seventh edition of Bands in the Sand, a day of rock, dancing, beer, sand volleyball and a whole lot of tunes. Chicago rock band Jimi Falls kicks off the afternoon with a 3:30 p.m. set, followed by Modern Day Romeos, fun local favorites who mix originals with a wide range of covers. Industrial rock group Filter leads into alternative grunge rockers Candlebox, both of whom are available for a meet-and-greet before the show for a little extra. 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at Sideouts Bar & Eatery, 4018 Roberts Road, Island Lake. General admission tickets start at $20; VIP packages are available. (847) 526-7174, sideouts.com or ticketweb.com.

Only One Direction to Soldier Field

Unlike the presidential summer playlist, we can't leave out the upbeat summer tunes of Brit-Irish popsters One Direction. A month-and-a-half into the North American leg of the "On the Road Again" tour, the now-foursome (Why, Zayn? Why?) will be packing the fans into Soldier Field Sunday, Aug. 23, with their boy band blend of teen pop dance love songs. Swedish electropop duo Icona Pop ("I Love It") open. 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, at Soldier Field, 1410 Museum Campus Drive, Chicago. Tickets start at $26.50 ($44.26 with fees and taxes). (866) 448-7849 or ticketmaster.com.

Battle time

If you find yourself at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield this weekend, be sure to swing by The Shed Saturday afternoon to support three local bands - Clear Confusion, Double Identity and The Dead Seeds - vying for top honors in the Illinois State Teen Battle of the Bands Championship Competition. Good luck to our musicians! Visit illinoisbattleofthebands.com or illinois.gov/statefair/ for more information.
