Authorities: Schaumburg woman shot after firing at police

A 31-year-old Schaumburg woman was hospitalized under police guard Sunday after police said she fired several shots at officers during an armed standoff before she was struck by return fire.

Tamekka Broyles, of the 1700 block of Maple Place, suffered nonlife-threatening gunshot wounds to the arm and shoulder during the exchange of gunfire late Saturday that ended a more than four-hour standoff at her home, Schaumburg police said.

Possible charges are not expected until Tuesday, Schaumburg police Lt. Shawn Green said. Broyles likely will remain at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for another day or two, he added.

Authorities said the standoff began after Broyles' roommate contacted police via Text-to-911 about 7:25 p.m. Saturday reporting that Broyles was inside their condominium holding a pistol and making suicidal statements.

According to police, the first officers to arrive entered the residence and found Broyles sitting down with a pistol to her head. Officers pleaded with Broyles to put the weapon down, but she refused, police said.

At one point Broyles pointed the gun toward the officers, who then quickly exited the unit, according to reports. She then closed the front door and refused to come out, police said.

Schaumburg police called for assistance from the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) Emergency Services Team, which arrived on the scene a short time later.

Shortly before midnight, police said, Broyles fired at least one round out of the window of her residence toward a NIPAS vehicle. She then stepped out of the condo unit and shot at NIPAS officers posted in the common hallway, police said.

A NIPAS officer was forced to return fire in order to stop the threat, and Broyles was struck twice, according to police. She was taken to Lutheran General, where she was treated for nonlife threatening wounds.

There were no other injuries reported.

The NIPAS officers involved in the shooting are not members of the Schaumburg Police Department, police said.

The criminal investigation against Broyles was turned over to the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, which is not expected to bring charges until Tuesday at the earliest, Green said.

The officer involved shooting, per protocol, is being investigated by the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit.
