Tool auction draws new homeowners, collectors
Hundreds of tools used in everything from gardening to carpentry, home repairs to construction were displayed and sold Saturday, June 27, at the Mount Prospect Historical Society's inaugural "Totally Tools" auction, which was held in the Saint Paul Lutheran School gymnasium in Mount Prospect.
The auction and sale, along with a tasting of local craft beers from Only Child Brewing Company in Gurnee and a sampling of barbecue from T Bob's Smoked Bar-B-Q in Des Plaines, was held to raise funds for the society's restoration of the 1896 Central School.
New homeowners were able to take advantage of deals on both gently used and new tools and collectors snapped up old tools that were donated, including a hand plow used in gardening, hand drills, scythes, planes and even a snow rake that was used to clear snow from roofs.
Some were sold via a live auction, while others were purchased from cash and carry tables.
"It was a great event, which we hope to refine and possibly repeat periodically in the future," said Chad Busse, chairman.
Sponsors for the event were the Illinois Barbeque Society, T Bob's Smoked Bar-B-Q, Robert Bosch Tool Corporation, Only Child Brewing Company and Busse Automotive.
The Mount Prospect Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is committed to preserving the history of Mount Prospect through artifacts, photographs and both oral and written memories of current and former residents and businesspeople.
On its campus in the heart of the village, the society maintains the 1906 Dietrich Friedrichs house museum and carriage house and an ADA-accessible education center. The society is also in the midst of an adaptive restoration of the 1896 one-room Central School, which was moved to the museum campus in 2008.
